Puglia November 2010 - Harvest

Another fine weekend trip to Trullo Azzurro. Our old friends Alan and Andrea had rented Trullo Azzurro for 10 days. We already had a visit planned that coincided with their last weekend so that was nice.

Our original plan was to fly after work and meet in Milan: me from London Bridge via City Airport, Mary from Woking via Heathrow. Then we moved the flight to the morning to spend more time with A & A. We could change the time but not the route so Friday morning we left within 10 minutes of each other to go to *different* aiports and both fly to Milan to meet up again. From there we travelled together to Bari. That has to be one of the dafter travel plans ever.

What A & A did not know was that it was harvest time and that they were going to be co-opted for harvesting and grape crushing.

The whole operation is pretty home grown.

The white grapes are given a light crushing to break the skins followed by trampling in the press.

Once the wellington boots have squeezed out the bulk of the juice then the screws are applied. The juice will later be transferred to a stainless steel vessel for the actual fermentation and then bottling next spring.

Our next set of guests are - apart from a sudden last minute booking - a honeymoon couple: ahhh! Given the lateness of the season we wanted to make sure they had a copious supply of logs for the wood burning stove. No bear skin rug but I am sure they will improvise :-)

We also augmented the usual welcome pack with some Prosecco (local sparkling wine) and arranged with the local agent for some flowers.

2gro scam - fake virus phone call

I got a scam call from 2gro at the weekend but fortunately - despite this blog's name - I was not taken in by a cold call purporting to be from a IT help desk offering to fix a virus infection and improve the performance of my PC. The guy was very evasive about what software was doing the reporting or how anonymous fault reporting would give him my phone number. Then he wanted me to grant him remote access to my machine to diagnose and fix the supposed problem. No way! I only do that to trusted people where I have initiated the call, end of conversation, goodbye scammer, *click*.

It is extraordinary the lengths scammers will go to create the illusion of credibility:
But it is all fake - smoke and mirrors. Nothing older than July 2010 even though the caller claimed they had been in business ten years. Both the office addresses are, in fact, of registration companies offering quick and cheap company formation services not real offices at all. No means of contact other than a phone number which takes you to the same call centre with the same flim-flam.

Stu Forrest's experience was exactly the same as mine:
"Received a brilliant Scam call yesterday"
"From an IT Company (www.2gro.com) suggesting that my computer had been sending warning and error messages to them, that I should go to a PC Share website, download a viewer so that they could go into my PC and show me the warning messages and make my PC run better. Read more..."

The Telegraph article explains more how these scams work
"Virus phone scam being run from call centres in India"
Britons targeted by cold callers pretending to be from Microsoft phoning to fix a fake computer problem. Beware cold callers – especially those claiming your computer has a virus. Read more..."

This has been a public service announcement :-)

Weekend in Scotland - September 2010

Mary's uncle, Ronald, has a week's timeshare in Kendal which he trades for holidays in other timeshares. This time it was Dunkeld about 60 miles north of Edinburgh.

We flew into Edinburgh, picked up the hire car and immediately drove to North Queensferry over the Forth Road Bridge in time for last orders at the excellent The Wee Restaurant.

The next morning it was the full Scottish breakfast complete with black pudding and haggis. Then there was just time for a short stroll round the town to admire that marvel of engineering and Scottish icon - the Forth Rail Bridge.

A short drive took us to Perth where we rendezvoused with Ronald and Avril for lunch and thence to Dunkeld and the timeshare which is in the delightful grounds of the Hilton Dunkeld House hotel. En route we stopped for a quick retail therapy at the Dewer's World of Whiskey at Aberfeldy.

Sunday morning we went for a walk along the River Tay to look at Dunkeld Cathedral and the town.

Puglia August 2010

A week in Puglia is just not long enough. We flew out late on a Thursday and overlapped with our guests by one night. We kept as quiet as we could but they heard us and popped round to say hello. We chatted for a quite some time and drank a bottle of wine - each. The next morning I was not so sure that had been a good idea :-(

Puglia August 2010 - Ironwork and Chillies
Ironwork and Chillies

We found the curious piece of ironwork in the niche in the courtyard - we think it might have been unearthed by Michele when he rotivated the garden. Then the guests had temporarily added the chillies for a splash of colour.

Friday was pretty hectic as it was changeover day - one set of guests depart, cleaners in, two tanker loads of water, next set of guests arrive.

Puglia August 2010 - Fixing the external lights
Fixing the external lights

We used the occasion to get the electrician round to replace all the external lights. The original electrician had skimped on the quality of the first set of lights. The Allen screws had rusted solid so we couldn't change the light bulbs. So we ended up paying to have them all drilled out and replaced by decent quality fittings. I will be testing the screws every visit to prevent a recurrence.

Puglia August 2010 - Harvesting our figs
Harvesting our figs

The figs were fully ripe and we had more than we could possibly use. Mary made a couple of jars of fig jam and gave a basketful to our neighbours.

We did get in a reasonable amount of relaxing and sunbathing sometimes in the courtyard and sometimes down at the beach. Every trip we try and get down to our favourite beach-side restaurant, or "shack" as Mary describes it - La Rotonda da Rosa - for a sea food lunch and siesta on the sand.

Puglia August 2010 - Lunch at the beach
Lunch at the beach

It wasn't all relaxation, there was some maintenance work to be done: a section of the irrigation system pipework to replace and a cupboard to paint. Then it was off to Bar Fod in Cisternino where they have free Sunday lunch-time opera during August. We met up with Chris and John early enough to get a ring side seat and settled in for Pimms and culture.

The artistes did about 90 minutes of assorted arias - the mezzo-soprano certainly had a big pair of lungs! That was followed by a long leisurely lunch at Osteria Sant'Anna with their superb anti-pasti. Mary kindly drove us home for a snooze and some relaxing followed by a quiet evening of pasta and red wine.

Our last day was spent on the beach and we were planning a simple supper at home when we got a call from Carol and Mino. They have a small apartment down on the coast at San Vito dei Normanni and wondered if we were free for supper. A professional chef asks you round for dinner - Yes, we certainly were free :-)

4th annual "Help us drink our excess wine cellar" and BBQ

I can do no better than quote Mary's facebook status: 12 hours, 34 people, 41 bottles of wine. Think the BBQ went well!

As in previous years we co-opted (for a price) the nephew Tom to be burger flipper which left us free to mingle and chat to our guests.

Then is was all Sunday to clear up - we gave the dishwasher a good hammering - and start packing for Italy on Tuesday...

Mental Jukebox

A quick review of past tweets reveals how often my mental jukebox is triggered by mental association with sights I see:

Lovely sunny day and in my head ♫ Happy and I'm smiling, walk a mile to drink your water. #fb

#cycle past hoarding "Happiness" - mental jukebox ♫ Happiness, happiness, the greatest gift that I possess. Arrgh! http://bit.ly/bfWmRh #fb

In the breakfast room we have a drawer with trays one of which contains can openers, bottle openers and various type of cork extraction devices. The next contains all manner of stoppers, vacuvin wine savers and corks.

And every time I open it these words rattle through my head:

Urban horticulture - Potatoes in bags

As most years we have a couple of growing bags - one with toms and one with some kind of legume. This year peas, last year french beans, the year before runners.

This year we tried something different. Inspired by our neighbors example we grew potatoes.

Three growing bags of potatoes

Mary decided that they were looking a bit scruffy so, as part of the tidy-up before the BBQ, I decided to move one down the alley-way and harvest the other two.

Ready to harvest

I laid down a garden sheet and tipped two bags out so I could rummage through and extract the new potatoes.

Emptied out

And what I got was a pretty pathetic haul - small but perfectly formed.

So the third bag is being more scrupulously watered and being given longer to come to fruition. Let's us see what that will yield in a couple of months time.

That's life in the big city

The weekend before last was a fine example of why we love being back in the big city. Fancying an evening of live music we went to see Brian Auger's Oblivion Express at Ronnie Scott's.

The early show was standing room only so we went for the late show which meant time for a leisurely meal beforehand. Courtesy of Top Table Trader Vic's were doing a deal: three courses and a cocktail for £25 from a Hawaiian menu. For a restaurant in a hotel - mind you it is the Hilton Park Lane - the food was excellent and the staff genuinely friendly.

At Ronnie Scott's the doors opened at 10:30 and the support act, The Yazz Ahmed Quintet, came on and did a fine set. Brian Auger's Oblivion Express came on at 11:30 and finished around 01:30 Sunday morning.

Ronnie Scott's

Brian did plenty of banter including mentioning that Keith Emerson, no less, was in the audience. And so it proved as we passed by the two of them standing chatting as we left.

Getting home? No problem in London! The N87 night bus goes from Trafalgar Square to Wandsworth and beyond (all the way to Kingston in fact). It was packed even at 2 in the morning, standing room only, with a very subdued bunch of fellow passengers many of whom seemed ready for bed.

Such night owls us, eh what?

Wine Tasting Dinner from the Abruzzo Region

Wednesday 28th July 2010

Another in the series of wine tasting dinners from Enoteca Turi. This time presented by the widow of the owner and the UK manager doing a double act - she spoke in Italian and he translated.

The food and wine excellent as always but the pace could have been a little faster. I confess that I do not normally have such long gaps between my wines.

The Rosato was very good. I find many rosés are neither fish nor fowl nor good red meat. This was that rare example of a rosé of character.

Of the two Trebbianos it was hard to believe they were the same grape. The first was pleasant enough but the second was in a different league. Deep yellow, warm caramel notes - it reminded me of vin santo.

The two Montepulciano were both powerful wines. The Villa Gemma was, apparently rated number 28 in the world by Parker. Harvested on 13 November - the latest harvest in Italy! Inky black, bitter cherry / smokey and, IMHO, many years still to mature.

And then a bus home in 15 minutes - we love living in London :-)

Update 07-Aug-10: Notes on the food and wine from Pam & Guiseppi

Food

From this simple way of live, many food traditions have been handed down from generation to generation, with some dishes actually traced back to Roman times. Egg and pecorino is common in many recipes to enrich different dishes, and similarities are to be found with the neighbouring regions of Marche, Basilicata and Molise. Intriguingly, there are some sophisticated combinations, such as Scripelle M’busse – a pancake made with egg, flour and pecorino, filled with pecorino and covered with a hot, rich chicken stock; Agnello Brodettato – a lamb stew, where the juices are thickened with egg, pecorino and lemon juice; Zuppa di Cardi – a soup with cardoons, dumplings of egg, pecorino and breadcrumbs in a meat stock. Chilli is used in many dishes, and pulses, especially lentils, play a big part in the local diet. Fish dishes, found on the coast, share similarities with neighbours: plain grilled as well as fish stews spiced up with chilli. Country families follow the age-old tradition of making salami from home-reared pork; many varieties of cured meat unique to this region are to be found, including one made with liver. Highly-prized saffron, introduced by the monks and now grown in the region, is not common in the traditional cuisine.

Wine

For a long time, wine making in Abruzzo was dominated by cooperatives, producing reliable red wine from the Montepulciano grape and white from the Trebbiano D’Abruzzo grape. There were a few exceptions, such as producer Valentino Migliorini, who made truly exceptional wine. In the last 30 years, a number of quality-minded producers have emerged in the region, of whom Giuseppe Masciarelli was the leading force, building one of the most dynamic wineries in Italy, in his lifetime. The estate is now run by his widow, Marina Cvetic, with wines such as Villa Gemma Montepulciano D’Abruzzo and Marina Cvetic Trebbiano/Montepulciano achieving cult status, These can be seen on the wine lists of some of the most prestigious restaurants around the world.

Puglia July 2010

A relaxing weekend in Puglia but all too short. Flew out late Thursday night - Alitalia via Milan - and arrived 01:30am Friday morning.

It was a weekend free of maintenance activities but we still had plenty of stuff to do. Met with Pierdonato to top up the kitty for cleaning and management fees. Next on to the local hardware store to replace a couple of beach chairs that had been nicked by some opportunistic passer by.

After lunch it was a trip down to Conforama (superstore at Fasano) to look for more sun loungers, replacement BBQ and cushions.

The evening was a meal in our regular haunt, restaurant Centro Storico, calling in for a pre-prandial drink at Chris and John's on the way out. After the meal we strolled around the old town and sat in the Caffe Della Villa for some ice cream, live music and people watching.

People watching at Caffe Della Villa, Locorotondo

Saturday was down at the beach interspersed with lunch at Rotonda de la Rosa 2. The original Rotonda de la Rosa is a basic beach shack serving good food and Rosa recently expanded into a real restaurant on the outskirts of Torre Canne.  Similar menu but linen tablecloth and glasses instead of paper and plastic. Starters inc. deep fried moscardine (micro-squid), spaghetti con ricci (sea urchin) and a nice glass of Falanghina. Followed by siesta on the sand.

Late afternoon with met with an electrician to discuss lights. The uplighters set into the path round the building have proved problematic. They look pretty and provide useful light but the poor quality has meant the Allen-keyed screws have set solid and it is impossible to replace the bulbs when they blow. A major refurb. and recycling of the good lights is planned along with a new motion sensor light on the roof to illuminate the courtyard for al fresco dining and an additional couple of power sockets. Probably not cheap :-(

This weekend happened to be Divingusto - the Puglia Food and Wine Festival - held in Ceglia Messapica. You buy a book of tickets then wander around and exchange at the stalls for local produce.

In the main Piazza del Populi a stage was set up for cooking demonstrations. Our friend Domenico 'Mino' Maggi was compere and also stood in for the chef of the Madrid Ritz who was not able to make it.

Special festival guest was Carluccio who was wandering round mingling with the crowd so we all shook his hand.

It was late by the time we got home. Sunday was basically get up, have breakfast and go. Still it is only four weeks till we go back out again. This time for the August bank holiday and a full week's holiday. Yay!

A crowd of people I met way back in 1980 get together on an irregular basis. One of the triggers for such gatherings is a visit to the UK by Maureen who left for Australia in the early 80's and never came back except as a visitor.

As previously Bill hosted the event; as he lives in Chiswick we decided to cycle the five miles to get there. On this occasion we met for lunchtime drinks followed by a stroll to Chiswick House Cafe for a light lunch.

As always it is like watching time lapse photography of our lives shown at high speed. People get married, have children, re-marry; hair grows greyer or scarcer; waistlines expand.

It was great see everyone again and we would have stayed longer but we had another back-to-back social engagement. We cycled off to Kingston to celebrate both Chris and Sue's birthday, the former very belatedly the latter in advance. It was a hectic and steamy pedal along the Thames path and we had to keep the pace up to make it in time.

Upper left six molar - doubleplusungood

Adding to my collection of dental x-rays and not in a good way. A couple of weeks back one tooth felt a bit loose but thinking it was possibly a bit of gum inflammation I was assiduous in my dental hygiene and it seemed to improve. But then it got worse and a trip to Harley Street was quickly arranged.

Raj was away but his oppo, Lawrence, did the honours with an x-ray and the bad news. One of the roots under the crown had broken off and gone septic - now lying at a jaunty angle (to the left of the x-ray).

So it is a week on the Amoxicillin followed by a surgical extraction. Not something to look forward to - doubleplusungood.

For I have built a mighty cutlery tray

Sometimes DIY projects go, more or less according to plan. Mary wanted to de-clutter the living room by relocating the cutlery from the overcrowded canteen into the piano stool. Unable to find ready made cutlery holders of the correct dimensions in Homebase or B and Q she suggested that I could make a custom tray. With the enthusiasm dial turned low I agreed. Much to my surprise - starting with five slats, an electric jigsaw and copious quantities of wood glue - that is what I succeeded in building with minimal hiccups or cussing.

All manners of belts and braces were co-opted to hold the thing together while the glue set.

The dividers were weighted down with magazines and whatever nearby heavy objects came to hand - in my case a variety of fine wines.

The 60's Allstars at Cannizaro Park Festival

Saturday night we had nothing planned so when Mary asked what I fancied doing I said "live music". A quick google revealed the Cannizaro Park Festival featuring The 60's Allstars. Perfect for a warm summer's evening so we booked ourselves a pair of tickets.

Cannizaro Park is on the edge of Wimbledon Common and part of my old stomping ground. We got there early for a wander round and a light supper before the concert at Cannizaro House Hotel - which is where we spent our wedding night.

The festival was well set up with food stalls, bars, a picnic area and all in the beautiful surroundings of the park. The festival itslf was situate in a walled garden.

The 60's Allstars line-up was:
  • Mick Avory - The Kinks
  • John Dee - The Foundations
  • Alan Lovell - The Swinging Blue Jeans
  • Del Mandell - Crispin St Peters

They did two sets of Golden Oldies whilst we supped a jug of Pimms. Half the audience was down on the grass in front of the stage having a good old bop. After concerts at the O2 it was refreshing to be able to stroll right up to the edge of the stage and be right there with the band. A damned fine evening :-)

cscalumni Drinks Tue 29-Jun-10

A beautiful summer's evening made The George near London Bridge a fine choice of venue. A small but select group made it for a number of beers including a welcome newcomer - Valter Johansson, formerly of CSC Index.

The pub had a good range of beers but unfortunately they were short staffed behind the bar - which may have been a good thing in slowing our consumption. After the usual chat and catch-up on news we dispersed - what more can I say :-)

Ben and Vanessa's Wedding Saturday 26-June-2010

We went down by train to Tiverton on the Friday night for an informal gathering and barbeque.

We stayed at the nearby Globe Inn in Sampford Peverell along with other guests including long time friend Jane (Fuller) and husband Brock.

The wedding turned out to be - mostly - more formal than I had expected from an eco venue. The groomsmen were all in matching outfits with fancy waistcoats and cravats. The bridesmaids had coordinated range of anemone coloured outfits and the wedding breakfast included the standard set of speeches. Mind you it was the first time I have seen a Best Man's speech involving a ventriloquist's dummy.

What was different was between the ceremony at noon and the wedding breakfast at five o'clock. We all took a walk in the woods to an old oak tree where Mike and Vanessa addressed the assembled guests and there were readings from the two mothers, Vanessa's sister, Joanna, and Mike's youngest brother, Tom.

Then it was back for tea and scones and an opportunity to mingle until the hog roast was ready. We then ate, drank, applauded the speeches and various friends made up two bands for music and dancing.

It was an excellent day and Mike is clearly so much in love with Vanessa it was heartwarming to see - not a dry eye in the house - has anyone got a hankie please.

Helen and Carol Galashan - National Lottery Sat 19-Jun-10

Four years ago the twins were both competing in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne as individual gymnasts [1], [2], [3]. Shortly after that they gave up gymnastics and switched to synchronised diving [4], [5]. This time they are hoping to make it all the way to the London Olympics in 2012.

We learned belatedly that they had appeared on the Lotto prize draw on prime time TV last Saturday. However thanks to the BBC iPlayer and the wonders of the interweb we were able to catch it later and here it is :-)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Chair

Our sitting room has a CRM theme so when we saw this chair at the local auction house we decided to have a punt and put in a low bid. Guide price was £100 - £140 but we got it for £90 - FTW!
