Makaya McCraven at Locus Festival 2023

Locorontondo, Puglia, Italy. Wednesday 09-August-2023.

This year most of the Locus Festival falls during our three week trip back to the U.K. to escape the August heat and crowds. There were a couple of free concerts in the main square by the commune (town hall) while we were still there. We decided against Lady Blackbird on the Tuesday so this was our only chance to go this year. Makaya McCraven is a jazz drummer and band leader with a number of accolades to his name

In previous years the concert in Piazza Aldo Moro was all standing and we had a couple of picnic chairs in the boot in anticipation. This year they have gone for seating and we were early enough to grab a couple of chairs.

It was a four piece band with the trumpeter doubling up on some percussion duties. They played for about an hour and a half mostly from his latest album “In These Times”. We listened to some of his music earlier before deciding to go so knew it was going to be good. Enjoyable modern jazz without being too outré.

It finished about 10:45 so plenty of time to get home and hit the streets for a night cap for the designated driver (me).
